31 Days 31 Inspirations - Day 31 - Don't Be Cool

The role models who formed my sense of being cool are smart, passionate about their interests, and fairly reserved. I guess I've tried to be much the same way, and it has led me to avoid situations where I risk looking like a goof. With the time I've had in the last few months to be introspective about my life, I've realized how limiting that has been.

Writing about something that inspires me every day, and publishing it, has been a good step forward. Each time I hit the publish button I worry a little less about whether someone will think less of me for it.

Now that this project is complete, it's time to plan another project that will push me further out of my comfort zone. I also want to look at other areas of my life where my "cool" baggage is limiting how much I can learn and have fun.

So to wrap up #31days31inspirations, I say... don't be cool!

31 Days 31 Inspirations - Day 30 - Warren Henning's "A Software Engineer’s Adventures In Learning Mathematics"

My inspiration today is a new post by Warren Henning, "A Software Engineer’s Adventures In Learning Mathematics". It's a great look at his journey to make a big leap forward in his understanding of mathematics. I think that many of his insights would apply to working to learn anything new and hard. And there's great math links in the appendix if that's your kind of thing.

Happy Friday everyone!

31 Days 31 Inspirations - Day 29 - Keri Smith's "Secrets of the Self Employed"

Over on Austin Kleon's Tumblr today, he linked to Keri Smith's inspiring list of advice for being successfully self-employed. Her post reached me at just the right time, because it covers a lot of ground I've been working on and thinking through as I'm gearing up my new business.

Keri's number 4 ("It will help you to create a social network of other self-employed people") feels like really good advice. I'm definitely an introvert, so I've been suprised that self-employment has felt lonely at times. I'll work harder to make friends with people in similar situations!

Now it's time to take some more of Keri's advice ("6. Goof off on a regular basis.") and go play drums.

31 Days 31 Inspirations - Day 28 - Let's Talk

Today is Bell Let's Talk day, a day to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of depression and mental illness. Too many people suffer in silence because mental illness is judged to be a form of weakness. Check out Michael Landsberg's video below for more...

Michael and everyone else speaking out today are my inspiration. Let's all try to be supportive and helpful, not judgmental, about whatever someone else is going through. Let's talk.
